WhatsApp scams: how to spot them and protect your business (and your customers)
WhatsApp has become the main sales and support channel for small businesses — and because of that, it's also a constant target for scams. Knowing the common patterns is the most effective defense, because most of these scams rely on the victim acting fast without thinking.
1. Account cloning via verification code
The scammer poses as someone you know (or as Meta itself) and asks for the 6-digit code that arrives by SMS, claiming a "registration error." That code should never be shared with anyone — it's the key to your account.
2. Fake profile of a known business
Scammers create profiles with the same photo and name as real businesses to request upfront payments or card details. Always confirm the number matches what's officially published on the company's site or social media before paying anything.
3. Fake promotion links
"You've won a gift card," "click to claim" — these links usually lead to pages that steal personal data or install malware. Be suspicious of any overly urgent promotion, especially from unknown numbers.
How to protect your business's WhatsApp
- Enable two-step verification under Settings > Account > Two-step verification
- Never share the verification code you receive by SMS, even if asked "urgently"
- Use WhatsApp Business with a verified profile whenever possible
- Train your team about these scams — the weakest link is usually human, not technical
