Over time, Windows accumulates a huge amount of temporary files: installers, update caches, thumbnails, logs, and leftovers from uninstalled programs. This can be cleaned up safely using only built-in Windows tools.

1. Use Storage Sense

Go to Settings > System > Storage and enable Storage Sense. It automatically removes temporary files, items in the Recycle Bin older than 30 days, and old downloads you likely don't need.

2. Run the classic Disk Cleanup

Search for "Disk Cleanup" in the Start menu, pick drive C:, and check the boxes for temporary files, Windows update cache, and system files. This alone frees up several gigabytes on many PCs.

3. Clear your browser cache

Browsers like Chrome and Edge store image and script caches from visited sites, which can reach several gigabytes. Under Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data, you can remove just the cache without wiping saved passwords.

4. Watch for the hidden update folder

The Windows.old folder (created after major updates) can take up dozens of gigabytes. It disappears on its own after 10 days, but you can remove it manually via Disk Cleanup if you need the space sooner.
